Driven Pheasant Stage One: The Egg

The rain has put paid to my attempts to bag that muntjac, and I have resorted to gazing out the window at the moist pheasants in the Keeper’s laying field for amusement. More and more ‘keepers are reverting to tradition and rearing their own birds. Keepers look at bringing in fresh blood, buying in purebreeds to mix with the existing birds they have caught up at season’s end. Michigans remain ever-popular for good flying…fine if you have acres and acres without interruptions. Byzantis (sp?) are the latest fashion for those with the MOD next door, or small shoots where they can’t afford for their birds to wander. Gone are the days of using broody bantams to rear pheasant chicks (well, for the most part anyway). These days electric hens and heat lamps play parent, seeing thousands of chicks to wood.
