One Clumber Spaniel Some Patience Required

I’ve always fancied a minor breed (hence why I married an American), and eventually got given one last year for my hrmpfth birthday. Hector WAS a cute puppy, but ten months after his arrival in the kennel it is hard to remember he is still just a pup. His manners need a bit of polishing lest he knocks down clients in his enthusiasm to get a cuddle, but mainly its his spasmodic interest in retrieving that we are working on.

Jen is spending every spare minute trying to develop his obsession with a tennis ball to the point we can throw anything and he’ll fetch it. I, on the other hand, have the happy job of spending spring’s extra daylight taking Hector out and developing his recall and directional controls. His nose WILL get him into trouble, so instilling the fear of Howard in him before he’s unveiled in the shooting season is a must. Especially before he learns to associate tweed and guns with sausages.
