What better way to start the season than three days spent tramping behind the dogs? Grouse over pointers makes you appreciate the beaters on driven days, and the quarry everyday.

Occasionally a plan comes together, and I pack the right equipment to make it happen. The estate we have been shooting grouse over pointers on happens to have the River Spey running right through it. This means three things: the potential for brownies, salmon, and fabulous whiskey.

It’s mid-August, and that means only one thing: grouse.

By the start of August, fluffy week old chicks have morphed into stroppy teenagers, ready for putting to wood. After all, in five weeks time the partridge season opens, and in 11 weeks the pheasant season starts.

I’ve always fancied a minor breed (hence why I married an American), and eventually got given one last year for my hrmpfth birthday. Hector WAS a cute puppy, but ten months after his arrival in the kennel it is hard to remember he is still just a pup.

Despite the perception of Texas being populated by longhorn cattle, cowboys and cacti, when we arrived East Texas was just drying out from a flood. Ranch manager cum wildlife biologist Zach Willeford and Mike, a Texas Parks and Wildlife ranger, awaited us with weapons at the ready.

Every year I try to add at least one new package to our repetoire. With the exchange rate in our favour, and the welcome mat out at friends’, it seemed only right to sample Texas.

For the more technically literate among our friends and clients, you may feel this addition to our website long overdue. Over the season, many of you express interest in what I do with the rest of my time (aside from attempting to appease my wife).

We had the pleasure of Ian Mason’s company on several days last season, and he was kind enough to write about Outside Days in the Sporting Gun. In case you missed it, here’s another chance to read it:Wake Up to Walked Up!
