Croatia: Balkan Stalking

Chamoix-over-sea-SLIDER-wp

More famous for their troubled past, the Balkans offer some of Europe’s finest stalking with quarry extending beyond roe and boar to include chamois, mouflon and ibex. Be warned: Balkan stalking is the killer combination of stunning scenery and spectacular sport just a short hop from major European capitals that will have you coming back for more.

Enthusiasm for sport abounds across Croatia, no matter the season, and stalking is available year-round. With variable weather that rivals Scotland for variability and San Francisco for fog, completing a stalk can be a real challenge.

The mountains above the Dalmatian coast are home to a huge population of Balkan chamois, and the area has produced world records in recent years. So taking on the weather is worth it!

Changing-weather
Foggy-Chamois
Occasionally the fog lifts and you’re right in the midst of a chamois herd. Nevermind being too close to take a shot – 5 seconds of collective wit gathering (chamois and man) results in an abrupt departure before you can mount a gun.

As the Croats say, dobra kob! Roughly translated, this is the stalking equivalent of the angler’s tight lines.

Mouflon-sage
Lest you have the wrong impression of the sporting qualities of mouflon as quarry, one is more likely to see their behinds as they disappear into the distance than an oblivious grazing opportunity. And that is despite Croatia being home to the world’s largest free-roaming mouflon population. Fortunately, the coast, peninsulas and islands at the foot of the Dinaric Alps also produce some of the world’s biggest trophies as an incentive to chase sheep.     Book Now
