It’s been a funny kind of year for flies: almost no hawthorne, and straight into the mayfly hatch. Despite a stiff breeze, the mayfly started hatching about lunchtime on Tuesday, and trout took immediate notice.

On our last full day in Texas, we joined guides Steve and Rob and ESPN journalist Lynn Burkhead in a pair of bass boats on Lake Fork. At an impressive 27,264 acres, Lake Fork is in three counties.

Despite the perception of Texas being populated by longhorn cattle, cowboys and cacti, when we arrived East Texas was just drying out from a flood. Ranch manager cum wildlife biologist Zach Willeford and Mike, a Texas Parks and Wildlife ranger, awaited us with weapons at the ready.
